Express Entry is the federal online system that manages Canada's main economic immigration programmes. For international graduates who have studied in Canada and built work experience through their Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is the primary — and most accessible — route to permanent residency. This guide explains exactly how Express Entry works, how your score is calculated, and how to maximise your competitiveness. StudentBuddy supports students planning their Canadian long-term future, from finding student accommodation in Canada to navigating immigration pathways through our student resources.

Quick answer

Express Entry manages three immigration programmes. International graduates typically use the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), which requires 1 year of TEER 0–3 Canadian work experience and CLB 7 language. Your CRS score determines when you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR. CEC draws occurred in the 440–500 CRS range in 2025–26. A Canadian educational credential adds 30 CRS points; higher language scores add significantly more.

How Express Entry works

Express Entry is a two-stage process. First, you submit an online profile to IRCC's Express Entry pool. The pool ranks all eligible candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which scores candidates on education, language proficiency, Canadian work experience, age, and adaptability factors. Second, IRCC holds regular draws from the pool, issuing Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to the highest-ranking candidates. Once you receive an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete permanent residence application. IRCC processes complete PR applications in approximately 6 to 12 months.

Canadian Experience Class: the graduate pathway

CEC is the Express Entry stream specifically for people with Canadian work experience. To be eligible, you need: at least 1 year of full-time equivalent work experience in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation in Canada within the 3 years before applying; no restriction on the type of work permit you held; CLB 7 language proficiency in English or French (IELTS 6.0 in each band); and you must plan to live outside Quebec (Quebec uses a separate immigration system).

Express Entry draws — how to follow them

IRCC holds Express Entry draws approximately every two weeks and publishes results on the IRCC website. Each draw specifies the programme (all-programme or specific category), the number of ITAs issued, and the lowest CRS score that received an ITA (the "cut-off"). Since 2023, IRCC also holds category-specific draws targeting specific occupational groups (healthcare, STEM, trades, French-language, etc.) with separate CRS thresholds. Monitoring draw history helps you understand where your score places you relative to recent cut-offs.

Targeted category draws — a major opportunity

Targeted draws have been particularly impactful for graduates in healthcare, technology, and trades. These draws invite only candidates with experience in specific NOC groups and have had CRS thresholds 30 to 70 points lower than all-programme general draws. If your occupation falls in a targeted category, your effective CRS requirement may be significantly lower than the general draw cut-off suggests.

Frequently asked questions

CRS scores for Express Entry all-programme draws in 2025–2026 have ranged from approximately 480 to 520. Category-specific draws (healthcare, STEM) have had cut-offs in the 430 to 480 range. A CRS score above 500 is competitive for most draws. Provincial nominations (+600 points) effectively guarantee an ITA regardless of base CRS score. Calculate your CRS score using IRCC's official tool to understand where you stand.

From receiving an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete application. IRCC aims to process complete applications in 6 months under their Express Entry service standards. In practice, complete and well-documented applications are often processed faster. Total time from ITA to PR approval is typically 6 to 12 months for most applicants.

CEC application documents include: completed forms (Schedule A, IMM 5406, etc.), passport copies, educational credentials, language test scores, proof of Canadian work experience (T4 slips, ROE, employer reference letters specifying hours and NOC), proof of funds, biometrics, and police clearance certificates from every country you have lived in for 6+ months since age 18. IRCC's document checklist is definitive — use it.

Yes. As long as you have accumulated 1 year of qualifying TEER 0–3 Canadian work experience and meet the language minimum, you can create an Express Entry profile while still on your PGWP. You do not need to wait until your PGWP expires. The earlier you enter the pool with a competitive CRS score, the sooner you can receive your ITA.

Yes. Work experience accumulated in Canada during co-op work terms (under a co-op work permit endorsed on your study permit) in TEER 0–3 occupations counts as Canadian work experience for Express Entry purposes. University of Waterloo co-op graduates who complete their programme may already have close to or exceeding the 1-year minimum by the time they receive their PGWP.
