Historically, it was mandatory for all children until the early 1970s when the education system shifted towards non-selective comprehensive schools. Although no longer compulsory, the 11+ exam is still used in areas with grammar schools and by some selective independent schools to assess students' academic ability.

The exam is usually taken towards the end of Year 5 or the beginning of Year 6 in primary school. It typically covers four subjects:

  • English, Maths

  • Verbal Reasoning

  • Non-verbal reasoning/Spatial Awareness.

Unlike standard school subjects, verbal and non-verbal reasoning are not taught as part of the curriculum in state schools, so additional preparation may be necessary. There are two formats for the 11+ exam: the standard format, where students write their answers directly on the test paper, and the multiple-choice format, where answers are recorded in a separate answer booklet. The exam is timed, generally lasting between 45 and 60 minutes.

The 11+ exam differs from other school exams in that it is specifically used for secondary school selection by institutions that base their admissions on academic ability. It is not a mandatory exam and is typically administered at the start of Year 6. The exam content can vary depending on the local authority or the specific school.

Unlike national exams like the SATs, which are standardized and aligned with the National Curriculum, the 11+ exam is tailored to assess a broader range of skills, particularly in reasoning. Another similar exam is the Common Entrance exam, known as the 13+, which is used by many independent schools and taken in Year 8.

The 11+ exam is administered by different exam boards, with GL Assessment being the most common. However, there are regional variations, and some schools may use their own tests or combine various papers from different boards. It's essential to check with local authorities or the schools themselves to understand the specific subjects and format of the 11+ exam in your area.

For more information and resources to prepare for the 11+ exam, there are various guides and practice materials available. These can help you understand the process, the skills tested, and the best ways to prepare your child for the exam.
