Every Indian student faces a wall of unfamiliar acronyms during the international business school
application process. This reference guide covers all the essential terms.
- MBA (Master of Business Administration)
- A 1–2 year postgraduate degree in business, typically requiring 3–5 years of work experience for full-time
programs. The world's most recognised business qualification. Programs at Wharton, LBS, HEC Paris, and INSEAD
consistently rank globally. Generalist curriculum covering strategy, finance, marketing, operations, and
leadership.
- MSc in Management
- A 1–2 year specialist master's degree in management, typically without the work experience requirement of an
MBA. Often taken directly after a bachelor's degree. FT's MSc Management ranking is separate from MBA
rankings. Mannheim, HSG, HEC Paris, and Bocconi lead this category globally. Increasingly popular among Indian
undergraduates.
- GMAT
- Graduate Management Admission Test. The primary standardised test for business school admissions globally.
Score range: 200–800. Target 650+ for top-50 programs; 720+ for Wharton/Booth/INSEAD. Tests Quantitative,
Verbal, Integrated Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. GMAT Focus Edition launched 2024 — updated format used
by most programs now.
- GRE
- Graduate Record Examination. Accepted by most US and many international business schools as an alternative
to GMAT. Score range 130–170 per section. Target 165+ Quant for top programs. MIT Sloan, HBS, and Wharton now
explicitly accept GRE scores. Strategy: GRE if you want to keep non-business graduate program options open
simultaneously.
- F-1 Visa (USA)
- US student visa for full-time degree programs. Permits 20 hrs/week on-campus work. Issued with I-20 form
from the university. Foundation for OPT and STEM OPT post-graduation work authorisation. All Indian students
studying in the USA on full-time degree programs require F-1 status.
- OPT (USA)
- Optional Practical Training. Post-graduation US work authorisation. 12 months standard for all US degrees.
Extended to 36 months for STEM-designated programs. Many business schools now offer STEM-designated tracks in
business analytics and management science — specifically to extend OPT for international students.
- H-1B Visa (USA)
- US specialty occupation work visa. Annual lottery cap of 85,000. Approximately 15–20% success rate per year.
The primary long-term risk for Indian business school graduates in the USA. Most Indian MBA/MSc graduates face
2–3 lottery cycles during OPT period before receiving H-1B selection — significant career uncertainty.
- PGWP (Canada)
- Post-Graduation Work Permit. Open work permit for any Canadian employer after graduation. Duration matches
the length of the study program, up to 3 years for a 2-year MBA. The single most important immigration
advantage of studying in Canada — it enables the CRS points accumulation needed for Express Entry PR within
3–4 years of graduation.
- Express Entry and CRS (Canada)
- Canada's federal skilled immigration selection system. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores candidates
on age, education, language proficiency, and Canadian work and study experience. Business managers and
management consultants qualify under TEER 1 categories. Canadian MBA/MSc study and work experience adds
50–200+ CRS points toward PR invitations.
- Graduate Visa (UK)
- UK's 2-year post-study work visa (3 years for PhD). Automatically available after completing a UK degree. No
employer sponsorship required during this period. Allows work in any role at any skill level. After 2 years,
must transition to Skilled Worker Visa (employer sponsorship needed). Business Management is not specifically
on the Shortage Occupation List, but many business graduate roles qualify.
- Subclass 485 (Australia)
- Australian Temporary Graduate Visa. Allows Australian business graduates to live and work in Australia for
2–4 years. Duration depends on institutional type, study location, and qualification level. Business
management graduates can apply for skilled migration (Subclass 189 Independent or 190 State Nominated) during
this period.
- MLTSSL (Australia)
- Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List. Management consultants, operations managers, marketing managers,
and other business management occupations are listed — enabling direct skilled migration pathway applications.
Confirming your target occupation is on MLTSSL before enrolling is essential for Australian PR planning.
- EU Blue Card
- EU-wide work and residence permit for highly-qualified non-EU workers. Requires a job offer above a salary
threshold (Germany 2024: €56,400 for most occupations; lower for shortage occupations). Valid across most EU
member states. In Germany, leads to permanent residence in 21 months — the fastest EU PR pathway for Indian
business graduates.
- AACSB / EQUIS / AMBA
- The three major international business school accreditation bodies. AACSB (US-based, highest global
recognition), EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System, EFMD), AMBA (MBA-specific, London). Triple
accreditation (all three) is held by fewer than 100 business schools globally and signals the highest quality
assurance. Always verify accreditation status of your target school.
- SOP / Statement of Purpose
- Personal essay explaining your motivation for the program, career goals, and why you have chosen that
specific school. The most critical non-quantitative element in business school applications. Typically
500–1,000 words. For MBA programs: must articulate clear pre-MBA and post-MBA career goals, with specific
names of target companies and roles. Start drafting 3–4 months before deadlines.
- IELTS / TOEFL / PTE
- English language proficiency tests. Business programs typically require IELTS 7.0–7.5 or TOEFL iBT 100–110.
Top MBA programs (HBS, Wharton, LBS) often require TOEFL 109+ or IELTS 7.5+. PTE Academic is accepted by most
Australian and UK universities. Some US programs waive English test requirements for applicants from India who
completed degrees taught entirely in English.
- MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain)
- The top three global management consulting firms — the most targeted employers for MBA and MSc Management
graduates worldwide. McKinsey, The Boston Consulting Group, and Bain & Company collectively hire thousands
of business school graduates annually. Starting salaries in the USA: $190,000–$210,000 total compensation. In
India: ₹35–55 LPA. MBB recruiting is heavily campus-focused — selecting the right business school matters
enormously for MBB access.
- MEXT Scholarship (Japan)
- Japanese Government scholarship for international students. Covers 100% of tuition + JPY
143,000–147,000/month stipend + airfare. Highly competitive — requires CGPA 8.5+ and strong research
background. Applied through Indian Embassy. For Business Management at Hitotsubashi ICS or Waseda Business
School, MEXT can cover the entire cost of what would otherwise be a $30,000+ degree.
