Optional Practical Training extension for STEM-classified programs — ALL US MSc CS programs
are STEM (CIP 11.0101); graduates receive 12-month initial OPT + 24-month STEM extension = 36 months total US
work authorisation. Creates 3 annual windows to enter the H-1B lottery. The most strategically important
benefit of a US MSc CS degree for Indian nationals.
H-1B Visa (USA)
US specialty occupation work visa; annual lottery with ~85,000 cap (60,000 regular + 25,000 US
master's cap). Software Engineers qualify as specialty occupation. ~25% selection rate. Cap-exempt
alternative: employers affiliated with universities, non-profit research organisations, and government
research entities can sponsor H-1B year-round without the lottery.
Cap-Exempt H-1B

EB-2 NIW (USA)

Graduate Route (UK)
UK 2-year post-study work visa for graduates of UK universities; no job offer required.
Critical for Indian CS graduates to explore London's tech ecosystem (DeepMind, ARM, fintech), build portfolio,
and transition to Skilled Worker visa. Software Developers (SOC 2136) are listed as eligible Skilled Worker
occupations.
Global Talent Visa (UK)
UK visa for recognised leaders or emerging leaders in academia, digital technology, and
engineering. Requires endorsement from UKRI, Royal Academy of Engineering, or Tech Nation (digital tech). No
employer tie; flexible; no salary threshold. Viable for Indian CS students with strong research publication
records or open-source contributions. Fastest route to UK indefinite leave to remain for exceptional CS
talent.
PGWP (Canada)
Post-Graduate Work Permit — Canadian open work permit for 1–3 years post-graduation. ALL
full-time CS programs at designated learning institutions in Canada qualify. 2-year MSc → 3-year PGWP. No
employer restriction. Critical for building CRS Express Entry points while working as a Software Engineer in
Canada.
NOC 21232 (Canada)
National Occupational Classification code for Software Engineers and Designers in Canada —
TEER 1 (highest category) in Express Entry. Software Engineers (NOC 21232), Data Scientists (NOC 21211), ML/AI
Researchers (NOC 21223), Database Analysts (NOC 21223) are all TEER 1, meaning they qualify for Federal
Skilled Worker and Canadian Experience Class programs with maximum CRS score weighting.
Express Entry (Canada)
Canada's points-based immigration management system using the Comprehensive Ranking System
(CRS). Software Engineers with Canadian MSc CS + Canadian work experience typically score CRS 490–540+,
placing them in regular invitation rounds. Ontario Tech and BC Tech PNP streams provide additional pathways
for tech professionals with provincial job offers, bypassing the CRS threshold requirement.
TGV 485 (Australia)
Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) — 2–4 years post-study unrestricted Australian work

CSWE vs ABET (USA)
ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) is the relevant CS program
accreditation body in the USA — not CSWE (which is social work). All major US CS programs (Stanford, CMU,
UIUC, Georgia Tech) are ABET-accredited. ABET accreditation is NOT required for STEM OPT or H-1B — regional
accreditation (HLC, SACSCOC) of the university is what matters for those visa purposes.
MEXT Scholarship (Japan)
Japanese Ministry of Education scholarship — covers full tuition + ¥145,000/month living
stipend for international students at Japanese national universities. Apply through Japanese Embassy in India.
Highly competitive but highly rewarding — effectively makes studying at UTokyo, Kyoto, or NAIST essentially
free with income. Strongly recommended for Indian students targeting Japan's unique tech sectors (robotics,
consumer electronics, automotive AI).

Orientation Year (Netherlands)
1-year post-graduation search year for internationals who graduated from a Dutch university.
No job offer required during this year. Dutch Highly Skilled Migrant permit immediately follows successful
employment above salary threshold (€46,107/yr under 30 in 2024). Critical for TU Delft and TU/e graduates to
navigate into ASML, Booking.com, TomTom, and Philips tech roles in the Netherlands.
GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
Standardised test required by most US and some Canadian MSc CS programs. Scored: Quantitative
130–170 (CS programs require 165–170Q), Verbal 130–170, Analytical Writing 0–6. Top US CS programs typically
require: Stanford 168–170Q, CMU 167–170Q, UIUC 164–170Q, Georgia Tech 162–170Q. Many Canadian and European
programs have waived GRE — always verify current requirements. GRE scores valid for 5 years.
CPT (Curricular Practical Training)
US work authorisation for F-1 international students to complete paid internships that are
integral to the academic curriculum. Available during spring, summer, and fall. CMU, UIUC, Georgia Tech, and
Columbia have well-established CPT structures. Critical because FAANG internship to return-offer pipeline
often begins with CPT-authorised internship in Year 1 — converting to full-time offer and activating STEM OPT
on graduation.
SCCLO / Erasmus Mundus (Finland/EU)
Security and Cloud Computing (SECCLO) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree — combines
Aalto University (Finland), KTH (Sweden), DTU (Denmark), and TU/e (Netherlands) into a 2-year multi-campus MSc
program. One of the most prestigious and internationally recognised CS security programs globally. Full
Erasmus Mundus scholarships available: €1,000/month stipend + tuition waiver for non-EU students. Highly
