Every Indian student encounters a wall of acronyms when researching international PM programs.
This reference guide covers all the essential terms for PM admissions and career planning.
- PMP (Project Management Professional)
- The world's most recognised PM certification, issued by PMI (Project Management Institute). Requires 36
months PM experience (bachelor's degree holders) + 35 hours PM education + passing 180-question exam. PMP
holders earn 33% more than non-certified peers (PMI 2024 Salary Survey). Valid globally and recognised in
every country on this list.
- PMI (Project Management Institute)
- The world's largest PM professional organisation, headquartered in Philadelphia, USA. Publishes the PMBOK
(Project Management Body of Knowledge) — the global PM standard. Offers PMP, PMI-ACP (Agile), PgMP (Program
Management), PfMP (Portfolio Management), PMI-RMP (Risk), and CAPM certifications. India is PMI's 3rd-largest
national chapter globally.
- PRINCE2 (Projects in Controlled Environments)
- A structured PM methodology developed in the UK, widely used across UK, Australia, Europe, Middle East, and
Asia. Foundation and Practitioner levels. Particularly valued in UK, Australia, and UAE construction and
government sectors. PRINCE2 Practitioner + PMP = the global PM credential combination most valued by
multinational employers.
- PMI-GAC (Global Accreditation Centre)
- PMI's accreditation body for academic PM programs. PMI-GAC accreditation is the gold standard for university
PM programs globally. Key institutions: GWU (USA), UCL (UK), UNSW (Australia), NUS (Singapore), Schulich/York
(Canada), SKEMA (France), Waseda (Japan). Always verify PMI-GAC status when selecting a PM program — it
signals that PMP exam preparation is embedded in the curriculum.
- APM (Association for Project Management)
- UK's professional body for PM, equivalent to PMI in the Anglo-Saxon world. Offers APM PMQ (Project
Management Qualification) and ChPP (Chartered Project Professional) — the UK's highest individual PM
credential. APM and PMI have a mutual recognition agreement. ChPP is particularly valued by UK government,
NHS, and defence PM employers.
- IPMA (International Project Management Association)
- A global federation of national PM associations. Offers Levels D (Certified), C (Senior PM), B (Project
Manager), A (Director). Strong in continental Europe (particularly Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland).
GPM (German PM Association) and Swissp are IPMA members. IPMA competence baseline (ICB4) is the European PM
standard.
- PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge)
- PMI's global PM standard guide, currently in its 7th Edition (2021). Shifted from process-based to
principles-based framework in v7. Covers 12 PM principles and 8 performance domains. The foundation knowledge
tested in the PMP exam. Essential reading for any PM graduate regardless of which country they study in.
- Agile / Scrum / PMI-ACP
- Agile is an iterative project management approach (vs traditional waterfall). Scrum is the most widely used
Agile framework. PMI-ACP (Agile Certified Practitioner) is PMI's certification for agile PM. CSM (Certified
Scrum Master) and CSPO (Certified Scrum Product Owner) are Scrum Alliance certifications. Agile PM skills are
the fastest-growing PM competency globally — particularly in IT and software development projects.
- EVM (Earned Value Management)
- A PM performance measurement technique that integrates scope, schedule, and cost data to provide objective
project performance metrics. Required knowledge for PMP exam. Widely used in US federal government projects,
defence, and engineering. EVMS (EVM Systems) certification valued in USA federal contracting. Key skill for PM
graduates targeting government and defence PM roles globally.
- F-1 Visa (USA)
- US student visa for full-time degree programs. Permits 20 hrs/week on-campus work. Basis for OPT and STEM
OPT post-graduation work authorisation. CPT (Curricular Practical Training) allows internships during study —
standard in US PM programs for building practical experience. SEVIS registration required throughout F-1
status.
- STEM OPT Extension (USA)
- Extends standard 12-month OPT to 36 months for STEM-designated programs. Most US MS PM programs are
STEM-designated under CIP code 52.02xx (Business Administration and Management). This is critical for Indian
PM graduates — it provides 3 years post-graduation to find H-1B sponsorship instead of just 12 months.
- PGWP (Canada)
- Post-Graduation Work Permit. Open work permit for any Canadian employer after graduation. Duration matches
study program length, up to 3 years. The key immigration advantage of studying in Canada for Indian PM
graduates. PGWP + Canadian PM work experience = significantly boosted CRS score for Express Entry permanent
residence application.
- NOC / TEER (Canada)
- National Occupational Classification (NOC) and Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER)
system used in Canadian immigration. Project Managers fall under multiple TEER 1 and TEER 2 categories: NOC
10020 (Administrative services managers), NOC 21300 (Construction managers), NOC 2173 (Software engineers and
designers). The specific NOC code of your Canadian job determines PR eligibility pathways.
- Graduate Visa (UK)
- UK's 2-year post-study work visa (3 years for PhD). Automatic — no employer sponsorship required. Allows any
type of work at any skill level. After 2 years, must transition to Skilled Worker Visa (employer sponsorship
needed). Construction and IT PM roles frequently qualify for Skilled Worker Visa given UK PM skills shortage.
- Subclass 485 (Australia)
- Australian Temporary Graduate Visa. 2–4 years post-graduation work rights. Project and Construction Managers
(ANZSCO 1332) are listed on MLTSSL — enabling Skilled Independent (189) and State Nominated (190) PR visa
applications during or after the 485 period. Regional study in Australia (outside Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane)
increases PR points and 485 duration.
- EU Blue Card
- EU-wide work and residence permit for highly qualified non-EU workers. In Germany, requires salary ≥ €56,400
(2024 threshold). Leads to permanent residence in Germany in 21 months. Most Project Manager roles at medium
and large German firms exceed this salary threshold — making Blue Card a realistic and fast PR pathway for
German MSc PM graduates.
- WBS (Work Breakdown Structure)
- A project management tool that decomposes a project into smaller components, creating a hierarchy of
deliverables. Foundational PM tool tested in PMP exam and used in every sector globally. Mastery of WBS — and
related tools like Gantt charts, network diagrams, and critical path analysis — is expected in all PM graduate
program applications and job interviews.
- PMO (Project Management Office)
- An organisational function that standardises project governance processes and facilitates the sharing of
resources, methodologies, tools, and techniques. PMO Director/Head roles are the senior career target for many
PM graduates. PMO career progression: PM → Senior PM → Program Manager → PMO Manager → PMO Director → CTO/COO.
PMO Leadership Program Manager roles command $120,000–$180,000 in the USA and £80,000–£120,000 in the UK.
- IELTS / TOEFL / PTE
- English proficiency tests. PM programs typically require IELTS 6.5–7.0 or TOEFL iBT 90–100. UCL requires
IELTS 7.0 minimum. GWU requires TOEFL 550+ paper / 80+ iBT. PTE Academic accepted by most Australian and UK
universities. Indian PM professionals with B.Tech/MBA in English medium often qualify for IELTS/TOEFL waiver —
check individual university policies.
