LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker)
USA's highest social work license โ state-issued by each state licensing board. Requires:
CSWE-accredited MSW + 2 years (3,000โ4,000 hrs) supervised clinical experience post-graduation + ASWB Clinical
Examination. Enables independent psychotherapy practice and insurance billing. LCSW in private practice earns
$85,000โ$150,000+/yr.
CSWE (Council on Social Work Education)
US social work accreditation body โ ALL US social work degree programs must be CSWE-accredited
for graduates to qualify for LCSW licensure. Currently accredits 530+ BSW programs and 290+ MSW programs.
Non-CSWE-accredited social work degrees cannot lead to LCSW. Verify CSWE status at cswe.org before applying to
any US social work program.
ASWB (Association of Social Work Boards)
US/Canadian organisation that develops and administers social work licensing examinations.
Four levels: Bachelor's, Master's, Advanced Generalist, Clinical. The Clinical exam (for LCSW) tests: Human
Development, Diversity, Assessment, Intervention, and Professional Relationships. Pass rate: ~79%.
Administered after completing supervised hours requirement.
Social Work England (SWE)
Regulator for social workers in England (since 2019, replacing HCPC for social work). "Social
Worker" is a protected title in England โ only SWE registrants may use it legally. Registration requires:
SWE-approved qualifying degree + ASYE completion + ongoing CPD. Fitness to practise framework. Scotland,
Wales, and Northern Ireland have separate registration bodies (SSSC, Social Care Wales, NISCC).
ASYE (Assessed and Supported Year in Employment)
UK framework for newly qualified social workers โ the first year of professional employment
post-qualification. ASYE involves: reduced caseload (90% of qualified social worker), regular supervision,
portfolio of evidence, and formal assessment. Leads to full SWE registration. Salary during ASYE:
ยฃ33,000โยฃ36,000 in England. Mandatory for NHS and local authority employment.
RSW (Registered Social Worker โ Canada)
Canadian social work title โ provincially regulated. Each province has its own college of
social workers (OCSWSSW in Ontario, BCCSW in BC, OTSTCFQ in Quebec). Requires: CASWE-accredited degree +
provincial supervised hours (varies: Ontario requires 2 years, BC requires 1 year) + ethics examination. RSW
registration is legally required to call oneself "Social Worker" in all Canadian provinces.
CASWE (Canadian Association for Social Work Education)
Canadian social work education accreditation body. RSW registration in all Canadian provinces
requires a CASWE-accredited degree. Currently accredits 44 BSW and 35 MSW programs across Canada. Check
caswe-acfts.ca before applying to any Canadian social work program. Equivalent to CSWE in the US context.
AASW (Australian Association of Social Workers)
Australia's peak body for social workers. AASW membership is the de facto professional
credential in Australia โ required for use of "Social Worker" title and for employment in most statutory
social work roles. AASW-accredited degree is mandatory. Overseas-trained social workers (including Indian MSW
holders) must apply for TCA (Transcript of Comparable Assessment) โ assessment of whether their overseas
degree meets AASW standards.
TCA (Transcript of Comparable Assessment)
AASW's assessment process for overseas-trained social workers. Indian MSW holders from TISS,
DSSW, or recognised Indian universities apply to AASW with transcripts; AASW determines if the Indian degree
is "comparable" to an Australian AASW-accredited degree. Most Indian MSW programs receive partial recognition
โ requiring additional coursework or supervised hours in Australia. Full recognition is rare without
Australian study.
SWRB (Social Workers Registration Board โ New Zealand)
New Zealand's statutory registration body for social workers โ registration became compulsory
for ALL social workers in New Zealand from 26 July 2021. Two stages: (1) Provisional Registration โ applies
for up to 2 years while completing supervised practice; (2) Full Registration โ granted after SWRB-supervised
practice sign-off. Indian social workers holding overseas qualifications must have their credentials assessed
by SWRB.
CORU (Health and Social Care Professionals Council โ Ireland)
Irish regulator for 17 health and social care professions including Social Workers. "Social
Worker" is a protected title under the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005. CORU registration
requires: CORU-approved qualifying degree (UCD, NUI Galway, TU Dublin, MTU) + fitness to practise declaration.
Overseas social workers apply through CORU's Registration Committee for qualification recognition.
NOC 41300 (Canada)
National Occupational Classification code for Social Workers in Canada โ classified as TEER 4
(Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities level 4) in the 2021 NOC system. TEER 4 is eligible for
Express Entry's Federal Skilled Worker program and Canadian Experience Class. NOC 41301 (Family, Marriage,
Other Related Counsellors) and NOC 41302 (Community and Social Service Workers) are adjacent categories also
eligible for Express Entry.
NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme โ Australia)
Australia's $35 billion/year universal disability support scheme โ created by Australian
Government to provide funding for 500,000+ Australians with permanent and significant disability. NDIS created
the largest single expansion of social work employment in Australian history. Social Workers, Support
Coordinators, and Plan Managers serving NDIS participants earn AUD 75,000โ95,000. NDIS registration + AASW
membership = strongest PR application for 189/190 visa.
PGWP (Post-Graduate Work Permit โ Canada)
Canadian open work permit for 1โ3 years post-graduation. 2-year MSW programs โ 3-year PGWP. No
employer restriction โ work for any social services employer in Canada. Critical for completing RSW supervised
hours and building CRS points for Express Entry. PGWP is not extendable; apply within 180 days of graduation.
Graduate Route (UK)
UK 2-year post-study work visa; no job offer required to activate. Critical window for social
work graduates to: (1) complete ASYE year with NHS/local authority employer; (2) achieve SWE registration; (3)
obtain Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Social Worker (SOC 2442) is on the UK Shortage Occupation List โ
Skilled Worker visa available with reduced salary threshold.
F-1 Visa & OPT (USA)
F-1: US student visa for full-time academic study. OPT (Optional Practical Training): 12-month
post-graduation work authorisation. Social work is generally NOT STEM-classified (unless in a specific policy
analytics or data track) โ plan for 12-month OPT. Key strategy: secure H-1B sponsorship from non-profit or
government employer (cap-exempt H-1B) during OPT period. Cap-exempt employers can sponsor H-1B year-round
without lottery.
Cap-Exempt H-1B (USA)
Certain US employers are exempt from the annual H-1B lottery cap โ including: non-profit
organisations affiliated with higher education, non-profit research organisations, and governmental research
organisations. Many US social services employers qualify (university-affiliated hospitals, non-profit CHCs,
NGOs with higher education affiliations). Critical strategy for Indian social workers on OPT โ target
cap-exempt employers for H-1B sponsorship.
TGV 485 (Australia)
Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) โ 2โ4 years post-study unrestricted work rights in
Australia. Duration depends on study location (regional = longer). Social Worker (ANZSCO 272511) is on the
Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) โ eligible for 189 (independent) and 190 (state-nominated)
skilled migration visas. AASW membership + ANZSCO 272511 + Australian work experience = 65+ points for PR
application.
Trauma-Informed Practice (TIP)
Social work framework recognising the pervasive impact of trauma โ physical, psychological,
and social โ on individuals' wellbeing and behaviour. Adopted by social work education programs in USA, UK,
Canada, and Australia as foundational to practice. LCSW candidates must demonstrate TIP competency in
supervised clinical hours. Understanding TIP is essential for child welfare, mental health, domestic violence,
and refugee social work globally.
IFSW (International Federation of Social Workers)
The global professional body for social workers โ unites 120+ national social work
organisations representing 3 million social workers worldwide. IFSW's Global Definition of Social Work (2014)
sets the internationally agreed definition and ethical framework. IFSW membership of your target country's
professional body (NASW/USA, BASW/UK, CASW/Canada, AASW/Australia) signals alignment with global professional
standards.
TISS Mumbai (Tata Institute of Social Sciences)
India's most prestigious social work institution โ located in Mumbai with campuses across
India. MSW programs in Social Work, Human Resource Management, Habitat Studies, and Development. TISS's MSW is
partially recognised by AASW (Australia) and CASWE (Canada) for academic credit assessment. Strong alumni in
UN agencies, INGOs, and government social policy. TISS graduates applying to UK and Canada MSW programs
frequently receive advanced standing.
Advanced Standing (MSW)
One-year (accelerated) MSW program for applicants who already hold a BSW degree. Typically
waives the first year of the 2-year MSW. Available at most US, Canadian, and Australian MSW programs. Indian
students holding a BSW from a recognised institution (including TISS, DSSW, or Jamia) may be eligible. Reduces
total cost and time by 12 months โ significant for budget-constrained Indian students targeting expensive USA
programs.
AMHP (Approved Mental Health Professional โ UK)
Specialist post-registration social work role in the UK โ legal authority to apply for
compulsory admissions to psychiatric hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007). Requires: SWE
registration + approved AMHP training program (typically 60 days) + local authority approval. AMHP
qualification earns salary uplift to ยฃ46,000โยฃ56,000. Most powerful statutory role available to social workers
in the UK legal framework.
Oranga Tamariki (New Zealand)
New Zealand's Ministry for Children โ the statutory child protection and care authority.
Primary single employer of social workers in New Zealand. Employs 3,000+ social workers nationally. Recruits
directly from Auckland, Massey, Otago, and Victoria social work programs. Starting salary NZD 62,000;
structured career progression to NZD 90,000+ for Senior Social Workers. All Oranga Tamariki social workers
must be SWRB-registered.
Socialstyrelsen (Sweden)
Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare โ registers social workers and other health and
social care professionals. All social workers practicing in Sweden must be registered with Socialstyrelsen.
Socionom degree (3.5 years) from a Swedish university is the entry qualification. Socialstyrelsen also sets
national practice standards for child welfare, domestic violence response, and elderly care social work.
