Choose depth over prestige
A detailed, specific letter from a teacher who taught you for two years carries more weight than a generic letter from a school principal who barely knows you. Choose recommenders based on how well they can speak to your actual work and character.
Make it easy for your recommender
Provide a short "brag sheet", a document summarizing your academic interests, goals, and a few specific moments or projects you'd like them to consider mentioning.
