IELTS is the most widely used English test for Canadian university applications — but it is not the only option, and for many students it is not even required at all. This guide covers every pathway to studying in Canada without IELTS in 2026, including accepted alternative tests, English medium education exemptions, and the important distinction between university admission requirements and study permit requirements. StudentBuddy helps you find the right Canadian university regardless of which English test you have — browse universities, scholarships, and student accommodation in Canada.
Yes, you can study in Canada without IELTS. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, CELPIP, and Cambridge C1 Advanced are all accepted by many Canadian universities. Students who completed 3–4 years of full-time education at an English-medium institution in a country where English is an official language may qualify for a full test exemption. Always verify with each specific university — policies vary significantly. Note: SDS for the study permit still requires an approved test score even if your university grants an admission exemption.

English language test exemptions — who qualifies
The most widely available exemption is for students who completed at least 3–4 continuous years of full-time education in English at an institution in a country where English is an official language. Countries that frequently qualify: UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, USA, and the Philippines. Indian students from CBSE or ICSE English-medium schools may qualify at some universities but not all.
Exemption requirements are university-specific. Some grant exemptions automatically upon receipt of your application and transcript; others require a letter from your institution on letterhead confirming English as the medium of instruction; others require both a letter and minimum grade evidence in English language subjects.

Critical: SDS study permit still requires an approved English test
Even if your university grants you an English test exemption for admission, the SDS study permit stream requires an approved English test score: IELTS minimum 6.0 per band, TOEFL iBT minimum 57 per section, PTE minimum 60 per skill, or CELPIP minimum 7 per skill. Your university's admission exemption and IRCC's SDS language requirement are completely separate. If you want SDS processing and your university grants you an exemption, you still need to take and pass an approved test for the immigration application.

An increasing number of Canadian universities accept Duolingo, including UofT (for some programmes), McMaster, Dalhousie, and many others. It is not universally accepted — UBC and McGill have more specific requirements. Always verify Duolingo acceptance for your specific programme before relying on it. Duolingo is NOT accepted for SDS study permit processing.
Many Canadian universities accept Filipino students for an English test exemption because the Philippines uses English as a medium of instruction. However, this is institution-specific — verify with each target university. For SDS, Filipino students still need an approved test score (IELTS 6.0 per band minimum) for the study permit, even if the university grants an admission exemption.
This varies by individual student — no single test is objectively easier. IELTS uses recorded British and international English speakers; TOEFL is purely American English and fully computer-based. Students from US-curriculum schools often prefer TOEFL; those from British-curriculum backgrounds often prefer IELTS. Take a practice test for both formats before deciding which to prepare for seriously.
If your university grants an English test exemption based on your prior English-medium education, you may be able to obtain a study permit with your admission letter alone (without a separate test score). However, this depends on which study permit stream you use. For SDS, an approved test score is mandatory regardless of admission exemption. For the regular stream, the study permit is based primarily on your DLI admission letter, which itself was issued without a test score requirement if your university granted an exemption.
IELTS is the most commonly taken test in India and widely available at test centres nationwide. CELPIP is a Canada-specific test some Indian students find more straightforward as it tests Canadian English directly. PTE Academic is fast (results in 5 days) and fully computer-based. The best test is the one you can score highest on — take practice tests in each format and choose based on your performance, not perceived difficulty.
