ARB (Architects Registration Board)
UK statutory regulator for architects. "Architect" is a legally protected title in the UK
under the Architects Act 1997 — only ARB registrants may use it. ARB Registration requires: RIBA Part 1
(B.Arch or equivalent) + RIBA Part 2 (MArch) + 24 months practical experience (PEDR) + Part 3 Professional
Practice Exam. Indian COA-qualified B.Arch holders qualify for Part 2 exemption at ARB-approved schools.
RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects)
The professional membership body for architects in the UK — separate from ARB (the statutory
regulator). RIBA Part 1, 2, 3 are the three-stage educational and practice framework. "Chartered Architect" is
the RIBA membership designation. RIBA accredits architecture schools in UK and internationally. RIBA Journal,
RIBA Awards, and RIBA Stirling Prize are the UK's most prestigious architectural recognition systems.
NCARB / ARE (USA)
National Council of Architectural Registration Boards — US national architecture licensing
body. AXP (Architectural Experience Program) requires 3,740 hours of documented experience across 6 categories
(Construction & Evaluation, Design & Planning, Practice Management, Project Management, Programming
& Analysis, Site & Building Design). ARE (Architect Registration Examination) = 6 divisions. State
licences issued by individual state boards; NCARB Certificate enables reciprocal recognition across all 54 US
jurisdictions.
NAAB (USA)
National Architectural Accrediting Board — accredits all US professional architecture degree
programs. A NAAB-accredited degree (B.Arch, M.Arch, or D.Arch) is required to enter the NCARB AXP process and
ultimately become a licensed architect in the USA. Indian B.Arch holders who choose M.Arch II
(post-professional, 1.5 years) at NAAB schools can fast-track to NCARB pathway.
M.Arch I vs M.Arch II (USA)
M.Arch I: 3–3.5 year NAAB-professional program for students without prior architecture degree
— covers full professional architecture education. M.Arch II: 1.5–2 year NAAB post-professional program for
students with a professional B.Arch (like Indian 5-year COA B.Arch). Indian B.Arch holders should apply to
M.Arch II programs at Harvard GSD, Yale, Columbia GSAPP — saves 1.5–2 years and $80,000–$120,000 in cost vs
M.Arch I.
AACA (Australia)
Architects Accreditation Council of Australia — national standard-setting body for
architecture education and practice. AACA accredits Australian architecture programs and conducts NSCA
(National Standard of Competency Assessment) for registration. All Australian State architecture boards (ARB
NSW, ARBV, etc.) require AACA-accredited degree. Indian B.Arch holders can apply for AACA Overseas Assessment
to potentially fast-track licensure without completing full Australian M.Arch.
CACB / ExAC (Canada)
Canadian Architectural Certification Board — assesses and certifies Canadian architecture
qualifications. ExAC (Examination for Architects in Canada) = 12-section national examination completed after
5,600 hours of internship across 29 experience requirements. Provincial architectural associations (OAA in
Ontario, AIBC in BC, AAA in Alberta) then grant licensed architect status. CACB will assess Indian B.Arch
degree for eligibility to enter Canadian Internship Program directly.
Pritzker Architecture Prize
The most prestigious international prize in architecture — awarded annually by the Hyatt
Foundation since 1979. Winners include Frank Lloyd Wright, Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Renzo Piano, Herzog
& de Meuron, SANAA, BIG's Bjarke Ingels' context. Most cited schools for Pritzker winners: ETH Zurich
(Herzog & de Meuron), AA London (Zaha Hadid), UTokyo (multiple Japanese winners), ETSAM Madrid (Rafael
Moneo). Attending a school with strong Pritzker-winner affiliations signals design culture depth.
Design Studio (Architecture)
The core pedagogical unit of architecture education — a term-long project led by a design
tutor, typically in a large shared workspace where all studio students work simultaneously. Studio culture
varies enormously: at AA and Bartlett, tutors propose highly experimental, often speculative briefs; at ETH
Zurich and TU Delft, briefs are more technically rigorous; at Yale and Harvard, briefs balance design
sophistication with theoretical depth. The quality and personality of the studio tutor is often as important
as the school's ranking for individual student development.
Graduate Route (UK)
UK 2-year post-study work visa for graduates of UK universities; no job offer required.
Critical for Indian architecture graduates because: (1) begins PEDR (24-month practical experience
documentation) from Week 1 in a RIBA-chartered practice; (2) allows completion of RIBA Part 3 Professional
Practice Exam while working; (3) converts directly to Skilled Worker visa with architecture firm sponsorship;
(4) starts the ILR 5-year clock. The Graduate Route's 2-year duration is perfectly calibrated for the ARB Part
3 journey.
F-1 Visa / OPT (USA)
F-1: US student visa for full-time academic study. OPT (Optional Practical Training):
Architecture (CIP 04.0201) is NOT STEM-classified — only 12-month OPT (not 36 months). This is the critical
difference from CS/engineering: Indian architecture graduates have only 12 months of US work authorisation
post-graduation to find H-1B sponsorship. Target RIBA/AIA partner firms (Gensler, SOM, HOK) who regularly
sponsor H-1B for architects. Cap-exempt H-1B strategy (universities, affiliated non-profits) less applicable
in architecture vs technology sectors.
PGWP (Canada)
Post-Graduate Work Permit — Canadian open work permit for 1–3 years post-graduation (3 years
for 2-year M.Arch programs). No employer restriction during PGWP — intern architect roles at any Canadian
practice qualify. Critical for building CACB internship hours, earning CRS Express Entry points, and
completing ExAC examination prerequisites before applying for permanent residency.
COA (Council of Architecture — India)
India's statutory body regulating architectural education and practice under the Architects
Act 1972. COA-recognition of an Indian architecture school is the prerequisite for COA registration as an
Architect. COA-registered B.Arch from IIA-affiliated schools is the credential assessed internationally (CACB,
AACA, ARB, NCARB) for partial recognition towards foreign licensure. COA registration alone does not allow
practice in any country other than India.
BIM (Building Information Modelling)
Digital methodology for creating and managing building designs, construction, and operations
data in a 3D model — replacing traditional 2D CAD drawings. BIM (using Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, or
Bentley software) is now mandatory for all UK government projects over £5M and increasingly required by global
architecture clients. Indian M.Arch applicants should be proficient in at least one BIM platform; Revit is
most globally prevalent in practice; ArchiCAD strong in Europe.
Parametric Design (Grasshopper/Rhino)
Computational design methodology using algorithms and mathematical relationships to generate,
manipulate, and optimise architectural form. Grasshopper (a visual programming plugin for Rhino 3D) is the
most widely used parametric design tool in architecture education globally. Competency in Grasshopper is
increasingly expected at top programs (TU Delft, ETH, Bartlett, Columbia GSAPP) and at parametric-focused
firms (Zaha Hadid Architects, BIG, MVRDV, UNStudio). Indian B.Arch students should begin Grasshopper learning
before applying to top programs.
PEDR (Professional Experience and Development Record)
UK framework for documenting practical architectural experience during the period between RIBA
Part 2 (MArch) and Part 3 (Professional Practice Exam). 24 months minimum experience is required, across 12
categories including design, construction, client liaison, and professional management. Must be supervised by
a Part 3-qualified architect (mentor). PEDR is completed online via the RIBA's web platform. Indian MArch
graduates on Graduate Route begin PEDR immediately upon joining a RIBA-chartered practice.
Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL)
University College London's architecture school — ranked QS #2 globally. Known for its
radical, politically engaged, and digitally experimental approach to design education. The Bartlett Unit
System mirrors AA School's format — each unit has its own tutor team and brief, often highly speculative and
critical. The Bartlett School of Planning and Bartlett Real Estate Institute are adjacent; UCL's
multi-disciplinary environment is a significant Bartlett advantage over the AA's fully independent status.
TU Delft Faculty of Architecture
The Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at Delft University of Technology —
ranked QS #3 globally. Home department of OMA (Rem Koolhaas), MVRDV, and UNStudio — the three most globally
published Dutch architecture firms, all founded by TU Delft alumni. 4 distinct master's tracks: Architecture,
Urbanism, Landscape Architecture, and Building Technology. The Building Technology track has particular depth
in sustainable systems and structural-architectural integration. All MSc programs taught in English.
SIA (Schweizerischer Ingenieur- und Architektenverein)
Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects — the Swiss professional association for architects
(and engineers). SIA membership is the Swiss equivalent of RIBA membership in the UK or AIA membership in the
USA. SIA produces Swiss building standards (SIA standards are respected globally for precision and
thoroughness). ETH Zurich and EPFL graduates are the primary route into SIA membership. Architect title is
protected in Switzerland; SIA membership signals Swiss professional standard.
EU Blue Card (Architecture)
EU-wide work permit for highly qualified non-EU professionals — salary threshold varies:
Germany (€43,992), Netherlands (€46,107 under-30), Italy (€25,000). Architecture is explicitly listed as a
qualifying profession in the EU Blue Card directive. Senior architects and project architects in Germany and
Netherlands commonly earn above Blue Card thresholds immediately; enables intra-EU mobility and fast-tracks
settlement permit to 21 months in Germany (with B1 German language). Key immigration pathway for Indian
architecture graduates in Continental Europe.
NOC 21300 (Canada)
National Occupational Classification for Architects in Canada — TEER 2 in the 2021 NOC system.
TEER 2 is eligible for Federal Skilled Worker and Canadian Experience Class in Express Entry. Adjacent codes:
NOC 21301 (Landscape Architects) also TEER 2; NOC 21309 (Urban Planners) TEER 2. Software Engineers are TEER 1
(higher priority) but Architects at TEER 2 still receive strong CRS consideration and qualify for all major
Express Entry and PNP streams.
Stirling Prize
The UK's most prestigious architecture award — presented annually by RIBA for the best
building in the UK. Recent winners include Grafton Architects, O'Donnell + Tuomey, Haworth Tompkins, Niall
McLaughlin. The Stirling Prize significantly elevates an architect's profile and often results in substantial
new commissions. Winning practices become magnets for talented graduate architects — interning or joining a
Stirling Prize-nominated practice is a significant career accelerator in UK architecture.
Venice Architecture Biennale
The world's most important architecture exhibition — held biannually in Venice's Arsenale and
Giardini. Every participating country builds a national pavilion; curators propose themes that shape global
architectural discourse for the subsequent years. Indian Pavilion at Venice Biennale has grown in prominence.
For Indian MArch students at top international schools, participating in your school's Venice Biennale work
(many top programs contribute) is a major portfolio distinction and professional networking catalyst.
