Nottingham Trent University is a leading UK institution known for innovative teaching, impactful research, strong industry links, and a vibrant, inclusive student community.

English Requirement

For the MSc Physics at Nottingham Trent University, international students must demonstrate English language proficiency. NTU accepts IELTS Academic as an English language qualification, and the test result must be within two years of the course start date. Duolingo and IELTS Indicator/Online are not accepted. The standard English language requirement is a minimum IELTS score of 6.5. For Indian students, Standard XII with 70–80% from select CBSE and state boards may also be accepted as an alternative. If your score falls slightly below the requirement, NTU offers a Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course of 6 to 15 weeks that can help you meet the entry standard before starting your degree.

General Requirement

To apply for the MSc Physics at Nottingham Trent University, the basic eligibility criteria require a bachelor's degree with a first-class classification or above 55% grade in Physics or a closely related subject. For most Master's programmes, the minimum percentage typically falls in the range of 55% to 65%, though competitive courses in the School of Science and Technology often require 60% or higher. Required documents include academic transcripts, personal details, proof of English language proficiency, and any programme-specific requirements. Applications are submitted through the NTU Applicant Portal, and international students should apply at least 3 months before the course start date to allow enough time for visa processing.

Course Specification

The MSc Physics is taught at NTU's Clifton Campus and covers advanced topics at the cutting edge of the field. Key module areas include quantum physics, medical imaging (covering MRI, ultrasound, CT and X-ray), materials imaging, and a frontier physics module where a topic linked to staff research expertise is explored each year. Research project areas can span liquid crystal devices, soft condensed matter, laser processing of nanomaterials, optical photonics, space weather, acoustic waves, astrophysics, cosmological models, and advanced techniques in art conservation. The course also includes a science communication module, where students develop skills in communicating complex and controversial topics to both specialist and non-specialist audiences, practised in a workplace-like setting. The programme culminates in an independent research project, allowing students to work alongside NTU's active physics research groups.
